4th Meeting between ITMA and Continental Tyre (M) Sdn. Bhd

On 10th Oct 2017, the 4th meeting between Materials Processing and Technology Lab, ITMA and Continental Tyre (M) Sdn. Bhd (Conti) took place at Meeting Room, ITMA. This meeting was the latest series of discussion among ITMA and Conti representatives to realize the research collaboration that has been proposed before. This time, Conti was represented by Chai Fei Chin, Tang Hon Peng, Jannah Jaafar Sidek,  Choong Lap Kit and Addy Chee Wei Kit. Meanwhile, ITMA researchers were led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Suraya Abdul Rashid and were joined by Prof. Dr. Mohd Zobir Hussein, Prof.  Dr. Abdul Halim Shaari, Prof. Dr. Luqman Chuah Abdullah, Dr. Norkhairunnisa Mazlan, Juraina Md Yusof, Roslina Abdul Rashid and Mohd Ali Mat Nong.

During the meeting, Conti clarified that their current research focuses were to work on the quantification of non-rubber components in natural rubber and characterization of components in natural rubber (NR) using GCMS/LCMS to detect such as lipid or fatty acid. In response to this matter, the meeting concluded some actions to be taken to identify the non-rubber components such as protein, lipids, metal ions and carbohydrates which comprises of 5-4% in NR. The research approaches are based on qualitative and quantitative analysis. Research groups were formed that includes cryogenic/HPLC/GCMS by Prof. Dr. Halim/Prof. Dr.  Zobir/ Dr. Norkhairunnisa /Dr. Suraya/Choong, titration process by Jannah, Raman Spectroscopy analysis by Addy, FTIR by Choong. Dr. Suraya will provide enumerators to help with all the lab works.

Conti and ITMA also agreed to apply for long term and short term research grants from MOSTI, MTDC and Cradle and the proposals will be drafted soon. Meanwhile, for short -term projects, this research collaboration will be using the existing grants by UPM. In return, Conti agreed to supply some materials, chemicals and consumables and pay materials characterization fees for this project.  The groups and contributions by each party are shown in Table 1.
